EPIC ROAD x. US I-70
Stay Wild Magazine & Harrison Sheehan Collaboration
What do you want to do? Where do you want to go?
Stay Wild’s Epic Road would be the chance to revisit a formidable road trip that I took at 19; the inspiration behind Working Title: US I-70, a feature film in development.
With where the writing is currently at, It’s time to hit the road on an epic mission To photograph the faces and places that had a part in shaping the narrative and then explore new paths seeing things from the characters’ perspectives.
It’ll be a trip along the fictionalized route (more complicated than the title implies), a research mission to document as much as possible and to produce a “proof of concept” short showcasing the feature’s potential for future investors.
The Journey to I-70.
As a student at Pratt Institute, I raced to make slick city-set shorts, but It took just a couple writing exercises to be reminded that the inspiration for my more personally affecting work was rooted in experiences I had as a seasonal worker in Colorado. From one confessional short story I wrote, came about several short memoir-style films that have ultimately lead to the actual writing of my first feature: I-70.
Teenage Crime (2012) - A really corny music video made with friends while I was a ranch hand at Adventure Unlimited Ranches in Buena Vista, Colorado. An awful song that I didn’t pick, a couple of American flags on the verge of retirement, and high altitude skinny-dipping.
Boy Like You (2013) - “Salida Colorado, pronounced like Saliva” 17 year old Jim sneaks out of his childhood home to rendezvous on the town overlook.
A script submitted as an application to Pratt Institute. currently unproduced.
U.S. 36 & 3 Years ago (2015) - Video Installation featuring an original short screenplay and its nonfiction video counterpart footage of the road trip and a bittersweet phone call that inspired I-70.
Australia Day (2016) - Andy, College drop out / rookie ski teacher, hosts an Australia Day party for the expat Aussies in Steamboat Springs, and accidentally reveals more of himself than he intended, to which one of the guests reciprocates with equal candor.
Pratt Institute junior thesis short. earned the Steve Horn Art Award, the highest project based scholarship given to one student a year.
Beach Rats (2017) dir. by Eliza Hittman - On the outskirts of Brooklyn, Frankie, an aimless teenager, suffocates under the oppressive glare cast by his family and a toxic group of delinquent friends.
Originally hired to scout the film’s ensemble of non-actors, the experience lead to a surprise audition and a feature film acting debut. - recipient of several nominations Winner of Best Direction at Sundance Film Festival and the Casting Society of America’s Artios Award.
You Look Good In Blue (2018) - Over the course of one night, best friends Kara and Danny navigate the nuances of their friendship to the beat of Brooklyn's underground disco scene, stolen kisses, and fumbling lovemaking.
Pratt Institute Senior Thesis Short, Premiered at the 42nd Annual Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco. European Premiere set for late April at Lovers Film Festival in Turin, Italy. Latin American Premiere set for May at Mix23 in Mexico City. (can’t go officially public with that information until April 10th ssshhhh)
U.S. I-70 (In Development) - Resigned to stagnant Saint Louis suburbia and stuck working odd jobs to help support his mom and sister, Levi finds himself immediately drawn to a free spirited older stranger with a similar upbringing named Bryce. When Kyle, a social worker closely connected to Levi’s family, quits his job and invites them both on a road trip to California, Levi stirs with young love and self discovery on the open road.
Currently workshopping in creative labs and submitting for research grants and fellowships.
Premiere table read scheduled for May 15th at the Chandelier Creative Library Penthouse.
I’m Harrison Sheehan. I’m a Brooklyn NY based photographer, filmmaker, and actor that grew up in Queens, Saint Louis, Buena Vista & Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
I’m excited to be part of a generation breaking tired clichés in independent film and queer narratives. My philosophy is that ultimately wherever you go, there you are and In my upcoming projects I plan to complement the freedom and vulnerability of being true to one’s self with the sublime feeling of being on a highway in the middle of nowhere.
